The Learning Technologies Administrator sets standards for operational, administrative, and technical specifications for the learning management system (LMS) and supporting technologies and ensures that the learning environment is stable. This role performs maintenance for the LMS (Blackboard) and provides support to Education in the design and administration of online courses and supporting technologies. The Learning Technologies Administrator configures and supports the Blackboard environment; ensures data accuracy and integrity; participates in and/or leads the testing and implementation of Blackboard functions; and performs and documents changes related to Blackboard configuration and enhancements.

Responsibilities

LMS Administration and Optimization

  • System Monitoring and Maintenance: Oversee LMS functions, including system monitoring, data management, and reporting. Ensure the maintenance of system parameters and manage user roles.
  • Advanced Administrative Tasks: Perform content management, HTML & CSS branding, Building Block and LTI maintenance, system upgrade testing and validation, publisher configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • System Performance and Upgrades: Implement application patches, enhancements, upgrades, and releases. Monitor system performance and coordinate tuning activities with DBA and Network Engineering teams.

Support and Collaboration

  • Technical Support: Provide support for video hosting platforms, web conferencing tools, plagiarism software, and assessment integrity solutions. Handle support tickets and provide direct support to faculty and staff with LMS functions.
  • Instructional Design Support: Assist Instructional Design staff with online course development and design. Plan and administer the course copy process and communicate course availability to stakeholders.
  • Vendor and Technology Interaction: Interact with vendors and technology providers to configure, test, and implement tools to enhance the LMS environment. Work with vendors to resolve application issues.

Training and Communication

  • Stakeholder Liaison: Serve as a liaison between the Information Technology, Education and Development departments, Blackboard, and other integrated technology providers. Cascade appropriate communications regarding course availability and system updates.
  • Training and Guidance: Instruct and coach faculty and staff on course management functions and the use of learning tools and technologies. Provide guidance and training for junior team members on supported applications.
  • Documentation and Best Practices: Document processes, procedures, and best practices. Manage releases and deployment activities, coordinating with multiple development and support teams.

Qualifications

Education/ Experience

  • Educational Requirements: High School diploma or GED required. A Bachelor’s degree in an IT field or equivalent work experience and demonstrated ability is essential.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience as a Blackboard Administrator and instructional designer is required. Additionally, a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in higher education is necessary.
  • Blackboard Expertise: Familiarity with user roles, problem-solving, implementation, maintenance of courses, and troubleshooting user problems in Blackboard is required.
  • SQL and Microsoft Office: Working knowledge of SQL for analytics and troubleshooting is strongly preferred. Advanced experience with Microsoft Office products such as Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Computing and Networking: Knowledge of computing, networking, and communications systems, as well as external educational applications, is essential.
  • Streaming Video Technologies: Experience with streaming video technologies is preferred.
  • Analytical and Troubleshooting Skills: Strong analytical skills and the ability to identify and resolve software and system problems are crucial.
  • Adaptability and Continuous Learning: Ability to function in flexible and adaptable work schedules and a willingness to continuously learn and improve technical skills.
