The Sr. Network Engineer is responsible for high-level network and security planning, design, implementation and optimization including complex LAN, WAN, WLAN and distributed server systems at Universal Technical Institute, where we are driven to make a difference. Additionally, this resource leads and performs the installation and support of network communications and security components and also serves as a senior level resource to the organization for IT infrastructure functions and audits.

Responsibilities

Network Planning and Architecture

  • Hardware and Tools: Plans and recommends network hardware, monitoring tools, architecture, and security.
  • Design and Review: Designs architecture, reviews network plans, and modifies networks to ensure performance and compliance with security standards.
  • Technical Direction: Provides technical direction, project leadership, documentation, and senior-level engineering related to IT network infrastructure.
  • Project Leadership: Takes on the role of project leader, often leading the planning and implementation of large-scale network projects through vendor comparison, cost studies, and vendor supervision.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Team Leadership: Acts as a Team Lead for the design and implementation of network infrastructure and security systems, leading and directing the work of others.
  • Business Interface: Acts as a primary technical interface with different areas of the business during project requirements gathering, design, implementation, and documentation.
  • Performance Appraisal: Provides input during the performance appraisal process.
  • Communication Skills: Uses open communication skills to gain the interest and involvement of others in the work process, connecting with people quickly in a friendly manner.
  • Training and Mentorship: Trains and teaches others in more junior positions.

Problem-Solving and Continuous Improvement

  • Troubleshooting: Investigates, troubleshoots, analyzes, and resolves IT network infrastructure and security problems that have been identified or escalated.
  • Process Improvement: Suggests areas for improvement and proposes solutions for internal processes.
  • Sense of Urgency: Demonstrates a strong sense of urgency in addressing issues and completing tasks.

Qualifications

Education / Experience

  • High School diploma or GED required. BS in IT field preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in IT field.
  • Minimum of seven years experiences as networking / systems professional, with 2 years’ experience as a Senior Network Engineer.
  • JNCIE, JNCIS or CCNP certification (or equivalent experience with demonstrated ability) required.
  • Six Sigma, ITIL or equivalent certification or experience preferred.

Skills

Technical Expertise

  • Networking: Expert knowledge of LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, switching, and routing technology, protocols, and optimization. Proficient in network security, firewalls, and IPS.
  • Server Maintenance: Expert knowledge of server maintenance and procedures.
  • Operating Systems: Expert knowledge of Cisco IOS and MS operating systems and products. Strong knowledge of Juniper OS.
  • Scripting: Proficient in one or more scripting languages.

Problem-Solving and Adaptability

  • Judgment and Decision-Making: Proven ability to use good judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Flexibility: Ability to provide flexible and adaptable work schedules.
  • Multi-tasking and Time Management: Strong organization, planning, and prioritization skills. Thrives in a fast-paced, changing environment where deadlines are essential.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Integrity and Relationships: Ability to demonstrate high integrity, develop strong working relationships, and build trust and confidence among peers and management.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficient in computer software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Project, and Visio.

 Work Environment

 

  • Regular business hours: however, overtime (including periodic off-hours and weekend hours) and on-call is required.
  • Must be able to work maintenance schedule, every 2nd Saturday per month.
