Overview

The Aviation Instructor is responsible for delivering classroom and hands-on lab instruction for UTI’s Aviation Maintenance Technician program. This position supports student development in General, Airframe, and Powerplant subject areas aligned to FAA Part 147 requirements and the Aviation Mechanic Airman Certification Standards. The instructor will facilitate technical lessons, demonstrate maintenance procedures, evaluate student performance, maintain accurate training documentation, and promote a safe, professional learning environment.

The ideal candidate has strong aviation maintenance experience, an FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification, effective communication skills, and the ability to mentor students preparing for careers as aviation maintenance technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver classroom and hands-on lab instruction for assigned Aviation courses in accordance with UTI curriculum, FAA Part 147 requirements, and applicable course standards.
  • Teach aviation maintenance concepts and procedures in General, Airframe, and/or Powerplant subject areas based on certification, experience, and assigned course needs.
  • Demonstrate proper use of tools, equipment, technical publications, maintenance manuals, diagrams, schematics, and approved technical data.
  • Facilitate lab activities, demonstrations, practical exercises, and student skill development in a safe and controlled learning environment.
  • Evaluate student performance through assignments, quizzes, exams, lab activities, practical assessments, and professionalism standards.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, grading, student performance, and course documentation in required systems.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and academic support to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors required for aviation maintenance careers.
  • Enforce classroom, lab, safety, tool control, FOD prevention, and professionalism expectations.
  • Prepare classroom and lab areas prior to instruction and ensure tools, training aids, equipment, and materials are ready for student use.
  • Participate in instructor training, course certification, cross-training, meetings, observations, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Support student success by identifying students who are struggling and communicating concerns to Education leadership when needed.
  • Maintain professional currency with aviation maintenance practices, FAA regulations, technical standards, and assigned course content.

Qualifications

  • FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification preferred.
  • FAA Airframe or Powerplant certification may be considered based on assigned course needs and verified experience.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of aviation maintenance experience preferred.
  • Experience in General, Airframe, and/or Powerplant maintenance subject areas.
  • Strong working knowledge of FAA regulations, aircraft maintenance manuals, technical publications, wiring diagrams, schematics, and approved technical data.
  • Experience performing inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, component removal and installation, and maintenance documentation.
  • Prior teaching, training, mentoring, lead technician, inspector, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to teach both classroom theory and hands-on lab activities.
  • Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to coach and support students with varying levels of technical knowledge and experience.
  • Commitment to safety, professionalism, tool control, FOD prevention, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to use computer-based systems for attendance, grading, training documentation, communication, and course delivery.
  • Must be able to work assigned shift based on program needs, including morning, afternoon, or evening schedules.
